20 years have past so fast. A men who lives most of his life under the camera. From a child to a teenager, from a teenager to an adult. This issue of CRI-J explores actor JKS’ 20 years acting life. He himself chose his best 10 works to let us see an actor Jang Keun Suk keeps changing through the 20 years of time. He speaks about himself, actor Jang Keun Suk’s personality and feelings.

Huang Jin Yi
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
An earnest feeling motivated me. Generally speaking, actors who started their career as child actors like me are always labeled as such, which doesn’t matter if they expect or don’t expect this. If I want to continue acting, I have to get rid of this label. But I can’t do it by myself… Only when my progress of acting skill is proved, I am recognized as a “qualified adult actor”. It is not easy to get in work on such a drama. However, “Huang Jin Yi” helped me to make the first step toward an adult actor very naturally. This drama was very meaningful to me. At age of 20, there were not many alternatives to choose the right drama. Under such an urgent situation, I grabbed every opportunity of audition. No matter what I need to prove myself, there is no way for me not to do it. Because of this, I was very carefully and actively to prepare the role… Anyway, I did what I need to do. That’s why the character of En Ho from Huang Jin Yi and Jang Keun Suk both are still existing.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
Possibilities to be an adult actor, not as a child actor. I had lots of distress as an actor at that time… maybe because I just split with my girlfriend at that time, it was very painful. When I played En Ho, I put my situation into the role. That’s why I succeeded to express the real feeling, not showing the imitation. As an actor, experience is such an important property. I first understood that.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
At that time, I had a feeling that there was no resting place for my heart, so only thing in my heart is acting. I put all myself to this drama. How come I would have regret? If I really need to choose it, En Ho died too soon? (Laugh) I wish he could live longer to protect Huang Jin Yi all the way through.
– What’s your most memorable line?
Before his death, En Ho said,”I don’t regret that my life is shorter than others…” Face to dying, En Ho felt helpless. I still remember how he felt even today. It always stays in the deep of my heart.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
I would feel Jang Keun Suk of those days only who could do is do his best with an earnest feeling. If I had a chance to deal with this drama again, it would be a big motivation as an actor.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
The scene I held Jin Yi who fell down while walking a tightrope. It was a kissing scene, but the director said that I looked like someone on drug.. (laugh hard), looking at my face. Then, he teased me. Even now when I see the scene, I laugh so hard.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
Compared to other dramas, I concentrated all my energies on acting the role. At that time, I was urgent on acting this role. I think my struggling experience and feeling after a sad separation from my girlfriend with that experience was well-expresses in the drama.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Huang Jin Yi mean?
At that time Jang Keun Suk’s acting was not matured. This is the drama of which Jang keun Suk doesn’t act well, but tries to act well with an intense motivation.
Hong Gi Dong
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
The character of Chang Hwi and a genre of modernized traditional drama. There were lots of traditional dramas, but this kind of modernized traditional drama was still new stuff. That’s why I wanted to challenge it. At that time, some people were worried that it was too soon for me to play in a traditional drama. However, I’m always interested in the new stuff, I didn’t stop to occur my spirit of challenge. (laugh) Of course, needless to say, the character I played (Chang Hwi) was really attractive.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
I learnt various ways to analyze the character I play from many different angles. Normally, costumes and hairstyles are almost fixed in traditional drama. But to make a unique traditional drama, I wanted to get rid of the typical image. In that sense, it was the first drama I started to focus not only on acting but also on how I should make the role visually. I learnt the way how to widen my acting. We call this drama as a modernized traditional drama, but it actually belongs to a traditional drama genre, drawing eye liners broke the routine, but I thought that helped the character attractive. Of course, it was my idea to draw eye liners and have that hairstyle.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
Most shooting were taken on the mountains or rural countryside. And it was so cold… I was exhausted already just coming back and forth to the shooting site. I realized what I need is not only good acting skills but physical strength. I wonder what would it be if the shooting was taken in a better environment? It was good to play a handsome character, but it was pity that I couldn’t enjoy the shooting.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“Kill”. As Chang Hwi’s character, there were lots of short lines, but with short lines to express Chang Hwi’s feelings, this was pretty difficult. We can’t say long lines are difficult and short lines are easy.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
It was the drama I first focus on not only acting, so I would like to add more visual effects.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
The sadness when Chang Hwi was told that the sword he had been looking for desperately was not real gave me a huge impact when I read the script. It was the first time I was full of that kind of emptiness when playing the role.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
Chang Hwi didn’t have lots of scenes in this drama, but I was working very hard to show Jang Keun Suk’s acting in a greatest degree. Luckily because of the hard work, this role has earned more good reviews than other actors.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Hong Gi Dong mean?
There were lots of pressure and pains, but I wasn’t beaten up. At last I successfully played the role. This is a drama that has both bright and dark side of Jang Keun Suk.
Beethoven Virus
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
Normally, as a famous maestro, the image is authorized and also very self-centered, but I think I can get rid of this prejudice, playing the role. In this drama as I cut my hair short, I think I could show a manly side.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
I found that I can play not only a handsome boy but also a manly adult. Before that, I was described as a skinny beautiful boy. But in this drama I tried to make a big change on the style, building up a manly character. And as I worked with senior actor Kim Myung Min, many people were worried but I think I wasn’t overwhelmed and did act well with confidence.
– What did you lose or regret?
Generally, the growing pain comes slowly and we accept it slowly. But I’m afraid I was a bit in a hurry. I wanted to grow fast. I cut my hair short, had beard and spoke in a deep voice. However, I was only 23… just 3 years ago. Why I wore the clothes that didn’t match to my age? Maybe I was just fighting against time. If I could be easy and flexible to response this role, what it would be?
– What’s your most memorable line?
“I’m the conductor!” I think I could show charisma in this scene. Did I look like a real conductor, didn’t I?
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
At that time I would play the role senior Kim Myung Min had played… But no matter when I will play, I want to play in a relaxed way.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
I think there was no sad scene. The last scene I conducted orchestra in the park was the most enjoyable. I performed in a relaxed way. Even now I can still remember those days, those warm airs.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
I had lots ambitions, so I was working very hard. I tried my best to play well, but on the story line, most people paid attention to maestro Kang Kim Myung Min played… It was understandable, but still I wished my efforts could be attracted by more people. Instead of being thrown in the towel, Jang Keun Suk striven until the end. I feel adorable seeing him in those days… Now I know that it is necessary to have a sense of tension in the drama, but meanwhile I was too young, I felt a kind of lonely because only senior Kim Myung Min attracted viewers’ interest.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Beethoven Virus mean?
It was a bit of sad and a bit lonely. In order not to be overwhelmed by senior actor (opposite role), I tried and tried to play with a sense of urgency in every scene.
You’re Beautiful
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
That’s because I thought I can express my normal daily feelings in the drama? Acting an artist was very interesting. When I acted Kang Gun Woo in Beethoven Virus, the character was very new for me to act, which led me to feel nervous, but I thought I would be able to show real me, acting Huang Tae Kyung, who is an artist. That idea made me feel easy.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
It made me what I am now and gave me fame and prosperous life. (ha ha ha) I got the first lead in a drama. Some of costars were doing the first acting roles. As a senior actor or as the first lead, I had to take the leadership. It seemed a self-mockery, but at that time I pretended to be an matured adult in my personal life. Instead, I showed real me in the drama. This drama made me realize the correlation between acting skill and age. And also, this is the drama that you see the most natural Jang Keun Suk.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
I don’t have any regrets. I was very satisfied and thankful to this drama.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“I can’t leave you alone!” The scene when Huang Tae Kyung revealed his feelings to Go Mi Nam. this line was said to be in rage at that time. I heard many imitated this. (Laugh)
Springsuk_USA_note: In the drama the script is not the same as that, maybe because here it is Japanese, it is the scene that Huang Tae Kyung grabbed Go Mi Nam when she was about to leave the company building to take the taxi, then they argued and kissed.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
I don’t want to make this drama too seriously. I want to make people involved in this drama enjoy themselves working on it. This drama is the most enjoyable and truthful work so far. I still would like to experience it again next time as well.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
Huang Tae Kyung is allergic to shell fish, so he can’t eat shrimps. But his mother didn’t remember it, so when they eat together, she ordered shrimp for him. There was a scene of Tae Kyung had allergic reaction after eating and run to the washroom to throw up. I am satisfied about my naturally acting on that even now.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
Truly I enjoyed a lot. I opened my heart to everything I could identify with. I tried to show real Jang Keun Suk, not what I acted. Releasing my heavy burden as “to be a matured adult” made me relaxed and natural myself.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does You’re Beautiful mean?
You can see the most real Jang Keun Suk in this drama.
Mary Stayed All Night Out
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
Kang Mul Gyul’s life style such as wandering in Hong Dae and enjoy drinking, women and free spirit. Even it was only in the drama, I wanted to live such a life. No matter where he is, he is always free and always undisciplined, which attracted my curiosity…
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
I got a friend, music and met Choi Chul Ho, my music partner. He is a music producer of the drama and we are still working together. Now we don’t have to say things out but know each other’s thinking well.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
At the beginning of drama, the character of Kang Mul Gyul was clear. But as the shooting progressed, I felt it was gradually unstable. It was like I got lost in somewhere I was familiar. I wish there was a clear guideline of the character…
– What’s your most memorable line?
“You are so cute~ ruff-ruff!” Actually I don’t remember any lines well, but I think I said this line so many times and also it was popular among women.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
As Kang Mul Gyul is the leading singer of an indie band, so he should be more direct, more loose… I want to portrait role more as original. If it should be acted ugly, I try to act uglier. If funny, I try to make the scene funnier.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
The scene I went to Namisum island with Mary. To tell the truth, the island was where I wanted to go with my girlfriend, but I went there first with an actress in the drama… While shooting scenes all over the island, I thought I wouldn’t be able to visit here again. I don’t know why I thought so… Of course, it’s possible that I visit there for shooting, but I think it difficult that I go there again with my girlfriend.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
You can see Jang Keun Suk with the longest hair. And also you can see shivering Jang Keun Suk in the cold. I met my music partner, Choi Chul Ho. And my motivation to make music became higher. That’s why Jang Keun Suk in this drama sang to my heart’s content!
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Mary Stayed All Night Out mean?
A desire for music and being a singer started strongly.
Love Rain
– What really made you choose this drama? What fascinated you most?
“Love” is the only theme of this story. I had an expectation about this drama that this would break through my image in a good way. I thought showing my innocent role who cries and laughs just for love to those who think I’m cute or trendy sounds not bad.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
I learnt not everything in this world will follow our wish. That’s why we always need to be carefully considered, no matter what.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
Time. Room to breathe. At that time, I was not mentally stable, so I had no time for human relations and work as an actor.
– What’s your most memorable line?
I think “Love Rain” is a kind of drama we can’t just pick up one part. I think the whole story consists of each line.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
I’d like to add more sophisticated feelings. I’m afraid the original was a bit analog, which was hard to attract viewers’ interest. After 10 years, I think it will be the ideal time to express analog, digital and more. I want to express the trends of that time.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
To shoot the modern part, we went to Hokkaido. It was so cold that made me enough to say some sad words naturally! I found the pain from my body could help to feel sad through this experience…
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
I was fighting alone. In order to stick to the end, I bit the bullet. In order not to lose myself, I desperately held on. You can see the sadness of Jang Keun Suk which is hard to be described by words.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Love Rain mean?
It’s the drama I’ve been tirelessly thinking of someone.
The Happy Life
– What really made you choose this movie? What fascinated you most?
Even I was a rocker, but I was really into rock music at that time. Freedom, anger and resistance… All of them were influenced by Director Lee Joon Ik and seniors.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
As the theme of this movie, I learnt how to enjoy my life. Also, I knew the reason to be an actor and I was so happy I could die. As an actor, I learnt to enjoy acting. At the same time, I learnt how to coordinate with others as a human.
– What did you lose or regret in this movie?
There was no regrets at all. Everything was good.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“I will sing till the end. I will enjoy all for you.” This was from a part of lyrics in the movie, but I think it says all about this movie.
Springsuk_USA’s note: The original lyrics are “Till the last, I will sing for you, I cried out loud that’s my happy life.”
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
By that time, I will not play the role of a son but of a dad. No matter what, if I can have another chance to appear on the movie, that would be really happy.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
The scene I played music with other senior actors. You’ll understand why I chose this because in this scene there was a harmony in disharmony. Even we played the same music at the same place, but it was different music each time. Every time you can see various ways of expressing struggle, joy, and passion.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this drama?
Lovable but charismatic person. I cut my hair short for the movie, but I had to start shooting immediately and was deep into the role before I got used to it. The shooting site was a place to play and study. It was my origin for my happy life.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does Happy Life mean?
A Midsummer Night’s Dream when I want to get back.
The longest wait
– What really made you choose this movie? What fascinated you most?
Military enlistment! Because in Korea, this is a topic that not only men but also women are interested in, so I was attracted. Also because this was the first time I acted in a omnibus film. I was curious and nervous about the plot material… and it was very interesting to be in love with a senior woman… (Laugh)
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
In fact, I didn’t have many scenes with other costars, but in a piece of work, it still takes much learning to express lots of various dialogues.
– What did you lose or regret in this movie?
A omnibus film has its pros and cons. It’s quite stressful to see the complete rise and climax of a movie within a limited time. To compress a part will internal expression become weakened, really hard to satisfy all areas.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“Let’s get married.” It’s the first time in life I said this line. It was an interesting experience to propose someone. Of course, it was just acting though. (Laugh)
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
I want to show Jang Keun Suk between a teenager and a youth, not an adult but no longer a child. I want to act more in detail of that vague, hard-to-define feelings.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
My first bed scene! Although in the bed scene I was only required to remove my shirt, it was still my first bed scene.
All movements were already decided. I realized that it was really hard to act using my own body.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this movie?
I wanted to be reputed as a young man who is playful and also smart. In front of the shooting camera, I wanted to be shown as I was having fun happily and still acting well.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does The longest wait mean?
A period of time when I was about to step into an adult actor.
The Case of Itaewon Homicide
– What really made you choose this movie? What fascinated you most?
Strong curiosity. It was based on a true story. The role I acted was a real-life crime suspect, but still no one knows if he’s a real murderer. As an actor, I think nothing could have been interesting than what gives the audience some room to imagine the endings. Because only when I could act perfectly, the audience would be able to imagine. It required me to have better acting skill. I thought it was a good chance to show my intention.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
Including myself, a lot of people have recognized me as a sweet actor. In this sense, when I chose this movie, everyone seemed very surprised. It was interesting for me. Because to reverse a speculation of the audience is happy and challenging as an acto.
– What did you lose or regret in this drama?
As an actor, I was able to establish my diversity. I think I gained a lot.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“I’ll show you something cool, come with me.”
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
An accident which was almost forgotten to be brought up again. I definitely want to do this kind of material. I also want to know how I act in 10 year. Something like showing more murderer’s atmosphere or making this accident into bewilderment once again?
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
If simply speaking of acting, the last scene was very exhilarating. The scene where the suspect walked out from the prosecutor’s room into the corridor, showing a nasty smirk by which we imagine the murderer succeeded to escape to the brink of being caught. As if saying “I’m the criminal, don’t you know?”, I felt that the whole incident kept the audience in suspense, which made me feel very good.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this movie?
Before that, I had a habit of looking into the mirror when I heard “CUT!” Because I was curious about how I was seen in the film. But through this movie, I learnt that is not important. Then, I started to put more effort in my lines or feelings, setting the mirror nearby. Actors have to concentrate more not on appearance but on the character I play.
For Jang Keun Suk, what does The Case of Itaewon Homicide mean?
It broke out of Jang Keun Suk’s shell.
You’re my Pet
– What really made you choose this movie? What fascinated you most?
I thought it might become my last movie to act a sweet role… That’s why I wanted to show my natural self.
– What did you learn as an actor or as Jang Keun Suk?
Compared to the character in the script, I tried to show my real self in the movie. As a result, I got a praise that this role only can be played by Jang Keun Suk. As an actor, this is the highest praise. Actually, it’s difficult to make a synergy brought by a conflict between actual self and the character in movie.
– What did you lose or regret in this movie?
Putting aside of criticism of the ticket sales and self-copying character, I buried myself in acting. I think I did quite well on acting and showing all I could do at that time. I don’t know if I lost anything or what I lost, but anyway there was no regrets at all.
– What’s your most memorable line?
“Besides the breast, I didn’t touch anything else!” In fact, I didn’t even touch [her] breast. (Laugh) In the movie trailer when this line came out, I heard everyone laughed. It’s simple and innocent but the line represents much of the character.
– If you remade this in 10 years, how would you want to do?
It’s impossible to film this 10 years later, because I believe I can’t express the same sweetness I showed when I was 24 years old. Even if I can do, it is merely my acting skill after 10 years.
– What’s your most memorable scene, whether happy or sad?
The scene shot together with eels. It took a long time for the filming and I felt very sorry towards eels, but I created the scene with eels brought me double satisfied.
Springsuk_USA’s note: In this scene, Japanese eels became the audience of his stage.
– What was Jang Keun Suk like when playing in this movie?
I can say the character was really like real Jang Keun Suk. You can see real and usual Jang Keun Suk in this movie. This is the happiest piece of work after You’re Beautiful (YAB). The character I played in YAB was an artist, so I could perform in an easy and relaxed manner. In You’re My Pet, Jang Keun Suk as a pet, actually that’s just like myself, so I could perform it realistically.
– For Jang Keun Suk, what does You’re My Pet mean?
Compared with other works, the happiest work I enjoyed myself. It reflects on the real 25 year old Jang Keun Suk.
